About Pilates

Some History – Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) and was originally named Contrology (control-ology) a system of exercises intended to strengthen the human mind and body with the method becoming popularly known as Pilates around the time of Joseph’s passing.

In the 1920s Joseph Pilates introduced Pilates into America as a way to help injured athletes and dancers safely return to exercise and maintain their fitness. Since then, Pilates has been adapted to suit people in the general community.
